Social Anxiety Disorder

A person suffering from this disorder is extremely fearful of going out in public. The person who has this disorder may not even realize this and believe that this characteristic is a part of her/his personality. Lack of social skills therefore makes the person misinterpret a situation prior to it even happening, sometimes weeks or months in advance. An example – a person with a serious anxiety disorder may never attend a wedding that he/she has been invited to, with excuses that enable him/her to avoid the situation completely. The fear is unfounded, but there is a perception in the mental makeup of the individual that he/she cannot deal with people or the situation. A person suffering from this disorder has a tendency to be withdrawn and depressed.

Generalized Panic Disorders

A disorder that enables the individual to think and believe that all is not right with the world. The illness manifests because of genetics, environmental factors or because of an imbalance in the brain. A person suffering from this broad range of the disorder has similar traits as someone experiencing a specific panic disorder or even the societal inconsistency. However, the symptoms, strange as it may be they may appear to some. Muscle tension and worry with a naive concept of what is the real deal take center stage. Excessive mood swings, restlessness, headaches, sweats, sleep apnea, frequent visits to the toilet, perpetual tiredness are also symptoms and reactions. How long do panic attacks last is a million dollar question and it is dependent on the problem at hand.

Specific Phobia

Fear of open spaces is a panic disorder with agoraphobia. It is an irrational phobia no doubt, but the person experiencing the problem has a reason why he/she feels this way. The individual prevents herself or himself from leaving the comfortable surrounds completely. If forced to deal with the issue, the person will experience deep sweat, numbness, cry bitterly, shake and tremble profusely, feel lightheaded, experience a choking sensation. The trigger as to why the person experiences this phobia could be because of a traumatizing experience. Fear of the situation takes over where he/she cannot handle the problem. The immediate response without knowing it is to protect and remove oneself from the situation in entirety.

Tools and measures to curb the disorder

Preventive measures to curb the illness are possible, provided the person has dealt with the problem. Here are some easy ways to help prevent panic or anxiety attacks from taking over your life.

  • Find the trigger and if you cannot avoid it – prepare yourself. Breathing exercises always work. Count from one to ten slowly.
  • Instead of trying to prevent the attack from taking over, try to control the intensity of the attack. For instance, if you have to negotiate something with a person who always gets the better of you, plan and keep yourself focused on the game. Do not shy away. You are therefore in control and the person is thrown off balance.
  • When you feel the phobia is going to take over, try to think of something else or do something else. Mental exercises like solving a crossword puzzle, a sum or working on something that takes you away from thinking about the problem – distract yourself.
  • Change the diet and include exercise. A balanced diet and exercise plan works wonders in every facet of life.
  • Finally, talk about the problem with someone who can think of a solution without being subjective.

When you look at the disorder as a whole, the question ‘is anxiety a disease’is real - it can take over your life. However, with workable tools and techniques, you can get past the disorder.
